The Codex Runicus is a unique medieval manuscript written almost entirely in runic script. Created around the early 14th century—likely circa 1300—this vellum codex contains a mix of legal texts, historical notices, and a notable musical notation: one of the oldest preserved Scandinavian medieval tunes. The Codex is a rare "archaic" revival. By 1300, runes were mostly used for short inscriptions on wood or stone.
