The turning point of this shared history occurred in June 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. Transgender women of color, most notably Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, were at the forefront of the uprisings against police brutality. Their activism catalyzed the modern gay liberation movement. Following Stonewall, Johnson and Rivera founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR), providing housing and support to homeless queer youth and sex workers.
