For the film's score, Nolan turned to his trusted collaborator, Hans Zimmer. At the time, this was their third partnership following the successes of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight . But for Inception , Nolan set an unusual challenge. He did not want a typical, scene-by-scene musical accompaniment. Instead, he asked Zimmer to write a deeply personal, emotional score based entirely on their conversations and feelings about the film's themes of regret, loss, and creation. Remarkably, Zimmer was not even permitted to see the final cut of the movie until after his music was completed.
