Dredd (also known as Dredd 3D ) is a 2012 science fiction action film directed by Pete Travis and written by Alex Garland. The film is a gritty adaptation of the British comic strip Judge Dredd , created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. It stars Karl Urban as the titular Judge Dredd, a law enforcement officer in the dystopian Mega-City One who has the authority to act as judge, jury, and executioner. The film follows Dredd and a rookie judge, Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), as they fight a drug lord named Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) within a massive high-rise building.
