La que se avecina was born from the ashes of another massive Spanish sitcom, Aquí no hay quien viva (No One Can Live Here). Both series share the same creators, Alberto and Laura Caballero. When Aquí no hay quien viva ended in 2006 due to a legal dispute over rights, the creators were forced to invent a new show. La que se avecina was their response: a spiritual successor with many of the same actors playing different characters. The iconic building from Aquí no hay quien viva was located at Desengaño 21, while the new show moved the action to the fictional Mirador de Montepinar, giving the creators a larger canvas and the possibility to explore new storylines.

Aquí no aparecen personajes míticos posteriores como Amador Rivas (Pablo Chiapella más tarde haría de Javi, pero Amador llegó en temporadas siguientes), ni Luis Miguel ni Nines Chacón .
