The transition to VR required a fundamental redesign of the core gameplay. The Kinect tracked the entire body, but the Oculus headsets only tracked the user's head and hands. To work around this, Harmonix used an inverse kinematics system to guess the position of the player's legs based on the movement of the head and hands. This allowed the game to focus on upper-body movements and gestures, ensuring that the choreography was both fun to perform and accurate to track. Players mirrored the moves of an on-screen NPC dancer, following visual "step cards" that guided them through the routine.
