Such was the impact of Moondram Pirai that it was remade in Hindi the very next year as Sadma , with Balu Mahendra reprising his role as director and the same lead pair, Kamal Haasan and Sridevi. While the original Tamil version was a massive commercial success, Sadma was not an instant box-office hit upon its release on July 8, 1983. However, like its predecessor, it was showered with critical acclaim for its direction, screenplay, music, and, most notably, Sridevi's performance. Over the years, Sadma gained a strong cult following and is now revered as a classic of Hindi cinema in its own right. The music for Sadma was also composed by Ilaiyaraaja, who reused the tunes of "Kanne Kalaimane" and "Ponmeni Uruguthey," replacing "Poongatru Puthithanathu" with the original composition "Ae Zindagi Gale Laga Le".
