The plot revolves around Federico (Primo Reggiani), a young medical student who abandons his studies due to a debilitating fear of blood. Fascinated by the new invention of the cinematografo , he dreams of writing love stories for the cinema. He gets his chance when a local producer, Don Gennarino Pecoraro (Ernesto Mahieux), impressed by Federico's apparent technical knowledge, hires him to direct a short film.
