The journey to After the Storm was anything but smooth. Following the massive success of her 1998 album The Boy Is Mine , which featured the historic duet with Brandy, Monica faced a five-year gap before her next full-length release. Originally conceived as a third album titled All Eyez on Me , the project was only released in Japan in 2002 after its lead single underperformed and the album was heavily bootlegged. Undeterred, Monica returned to the studio, scrapping much of the original material and starting anew with top-tier collaborators.
