Decades later, an older Michael (played by Ralph Fiennes) remains emotionally stunted by his past with Hanna. He begins recording himself reading the books from their youth and sends the cassette tapes to her in prison. Using these tapes, Hanna painstakingly teaches herself to read and write. Hanna’s illiteracy is the narrative engine of the film. Her shame over not being able to read is so consuming that she prefers a life sentence in prison over public exposure. This illiteracy serves as a powerful metaphor for her moral blindness. Hanna represents the ordinary citizens who blindly followed orders, unable or unwilling to "read" the horrific ethical consequences of the regime they served. 2.
