Richard Louv's groundbreaking work, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder , gave name to a phenomenon that parents and educators had long suspected. Louv documents how children's connections to nature have diminished dramatically, with profound "social, psychological, and spiritual implications". He explores how fears—parents' fears of traffic, strangers, and disease; schools' emphasis on homework and structured schedules; and regulatory constraints on wild spaces—have combined to make natural play increasingly rare. Yet the research also offers hope: environment-based education "dramatically improves standardized test scores and grade-point averages and develops skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision making". Moreover, "childhood experiences in nature stimulate creativity".
