The film tells the true story of Desmond Doss , a Seventh-day Adventist Christian who served as a combat medic during World War II. Because of his religious beliefs, he refused to carry or use a weapon or firearm of any kind. During the Battle of Okinawa, he stayed behind on the "Hacksaw Ridge" escarpment and saved 75 men without firing a single shot, becoming the first conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor.
