Vimukthi Jayasundara is a Sri Lankan filmmaker who won the (Best First Film) at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival for The Forsaken Land . Chatrak was his second feature—and his first in Bengali. The film was produced by French and Indian co-producers and premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2011.

Despite the sensationalism, Chatrak occupies an important niche in the evolution of modern Bengali parallel cinema. It pushed boundaries in a market traditionally dominated by mainstream family dramas or conventional art-house tropes.
